We recommend guests wear light comfortable clothing and walking shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and water from the ship. Each horse carriage can accommodate 2 guests each and lasts 45-minutes.
Explore the long and rich legacy of Alexandria during this scenic, half-day excursion to some of the city's most interesting and historic sites.
Depart the pier for the approximate 30-minute drive to the Catacombs of Kom al-Shoqafa. En route, pass by Pompey's Pillar.
Pompey's Pillar
Erected in 297 A.D., this massive column measures approximately 84 feet (about 26 metres) in height. Originally part of the Temple of Serapis, the pillar was made from a single slab of polished rose granite.
Catacombs Of Kom Al-Shoqafa
Discovered in 1900, the largest Roman cemetery in Alexandria is composed of three levels cut approximately 90 feet (about 27 metres) deep into the existing rock. The catacombs date from the beginning of the 2nd century A.D., and started out as a family crypt that was later extended to hold more than 300 dead. Upon arrival, take a guided tour through parts of this subterranean cemetery.
Roman Theatre
Your tour concludes with a visit to the Roman Theatre. Located in downtown Alexandria, this Roman theatre is considered unique in Egypt. The theatre was discovered in the early-1960s during the construction of a new building, and features 12 semi-circular marble tiers in remarkably good condition.
Following your visit, re-board your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 kilometers (.75 miles) over sometimes unpaved surfaces, with approximately 130 steps to negotiate throughout. Please use caution inside the catacombs. A low ceiling in some places requires walking in a bent position; the ground may be slippery and uneven. Cameras and video cameras are not allowed inside the catacombs. This tour is not suitable for guests suffering of claustrophobia, guests with limited mobility, or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear flat, walking shoes with non-slip soles and bring a cardigan with sleeves to wear in the catacombs, as it may be cool. The tour sequency may vary.
