Sunrise Peak & Seongeup Folk Village
Jeju / Südkorea
Level: 3
4 Stunden
Erwachsene ab 66€ / Kinder ab 47€

OVERVIEW

Take in the spectacular view from atop crater-shaped Seaongsan Sunrise Rock and then visit a traditional village that reveals the rich culture and heritage of Jeju Island. After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a leisurely 50 minute drive to Seaongsan Sunrise Rock, a crater named in part because it lies on Jeju’s easternmost shore and attracts locals that gather to watch the sunrise. Formed a millennia ago in a series of underwater volcanic eruptions, the crater looks like a crown because 99 jagged rocks surround the top of the huge circular crater. It is so stunning that UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site. You may walk up the stairs leading to the jungle-covered bowl at the top or remain below. Both perspectives offer spectacular views. Seaongsan, which means “castle hill,” was originally an islet but a thin strip of land now connects it to the main island. The crater is an outstanding example of a lava cone and volcanologists continually study it, as do botanists who come for the endemic flora. Next, you will drive inland to a wide plain at the foot of Hallasan Mountain, where you will find the Seongeup Folk Village. Created as an expression of traditional Korean life, the re-created village contains several rock-walled thatched-roofed houses. Other highlights include Confucian shrines, fortress ruins and ancient government buildings. Many of the traditions and even the dialect spoken here have been handed down over the generations. After visiting, you will re-board your coach and travel back to the pier.

HIGHLIGHTS

• Take in the stunning views from atop a volcanic crown-like crater.
• Recognize the reasons why UNESCO declared the crater a World Heritage site.
• See village buildings ranging from Confucian shrines to thatched-roof houses.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing.
• Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.

The work is perilous, and the divers have become much-admired symbols of female independence and strength. Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute morning drive to the Manjanggul Cave, one of the longest and finest lava tunnels in South Korea and the world, a Natural Monument, and an UNESCO World Heritage Site. A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface. Formed about 300,000 to 200,000 years ago, the lava tunnel at the Manjanggul Cave measures approximately 75 feet (about 23 metres) wide and approximately 98 feet (about 30 metres) in height, and stretches for approximately 29,291 feet (about 8,928 metres). Other highlights of your visit include the largest-known lava column in the world, a stunning lava column measuring approximately 25 feet (about 7.6 metres) in height, and the largest colony of common, bent-wing bats in South Korea. The tunnel's interior sustains a temperature of approximately 52 degrees Fahrenheit-70 degrees Fahrenheit (about 11 degrees Celsius-21 degrees Celsius), creating a comfortable climate for your walking tour.

Sunrise Peak, Volcanic Crater, Sharp Rocks, Cliffs, Crater Visit, Magnificent Sea & Coastal Views

Next, take a guided hike to the Seongsan Ilchulbong (Sunrise Peak), an UNESCO World Heritage Site. At its top is a huge volcanic crater measuring approximately 1,968 feet (about 600 metres) in diameter, and approximately 295 feet (about 90 metres) in height. With 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. The southeast and north sides are cliffs, northwest side is a verdant grassy hill connected to the Sunrise Village, and yellow fields of canola flowers surround the peak in spring. A hike up to the crater offers magnificent island and sea views. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Native Faces of Jeju
Classic - Selected Excursion
Dauer: 4.0 Stunden
Code: CHK-K

Experience the splendid native faces of Jeju Island during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Jeju, Sangumburi Crater

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 40-minute drive to the south-east side of Jeju for a visit to Sangumburi, a massive volcanic crater designated as a Natural Monument. This enormous crater has a circumference of over 1.2 miles (about two kilometres), is approximately 710 yards (about 650 metres) in width, and approximately 109 yards (about 100 metres) in depth. From up above, the Sangumburi Crater looks like a man-made circular stadium.

Guided Crater Hike, Diverse Plant & Tree Species

Upon arrival, take a guided hike to the crater, where an incredibly vast and dazzling array of diverse plant and tree life awaits your arrival. On the north side, see Nandaeseong vegetation such as red-thorn and magnolia trees grow, along with rare winter strawberries. On the south side of the crater, Ondaerim vegetation such as evergreens, maples, and mountain strawberry trees blanket the area. Because so many different species of trees and plants grow in such a limited space, the Sangumburi Crater attracts the attention of researchers as well. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head to Jocheon-eup for a visit to the Jeju Stone Cultural Park.

Jeju Stone Cultural Park, Museum & Park Tours, Stone Objects, Art & Guardians

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of this captivating museum and ecological park. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.86 miles (about three kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and natural surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 10-20 steps to enter the buildings. Dongmun Market, Guided Tour, Free Time, Shopping

Next, re-board your coach and drive to the local restaurant for a delectable lunch based on the local Jeju's culinary specialty Jeju's Balck Pork. After lunch head to Dongmun Traditional Market, which was established after the liberation in 1945. Due to a huge fire that broke out in March 1954, the entire market and nearby area were reduced to ashes. The market was then moved to its current location and kept its original name. As one of the most popular traditional markets in Jeju, Dongmun has served countless customers, selling a wide array of items at inexpensive prices. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of this bustling market, followed by some free time to browse for souvenirs. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.24 miles (about two kilometres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 5-10 steps at the martial arts venue.
