Savor authentic Hawaiian dishes and beverages at several establishments in the historical district of Wailuku, which nestles at the foot of the West Maui Mountains.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in the heart of historical Wailuku, where you will stop in a variety of unpretentious restaurants and locales to sample pure Hawaiian specialties. Some of the dishes will reflect the town’s Asian and Pacific Islander ethnicities.

While the exact offerings will vary, you can expect to taste breakfast staples such as banana pancakes and hot malasadas, a fried-dough treat that Portuguese sugarcane workers introduced to Hawaii in the late 19th century.

Loco moco is another classic, and the Tasty Crust has been serving it for more than 40 years in Wailuku. The dish is a savory combination of rice, hamburger patty and brown gravy, topped with a fried egg or two.

In all likelihood, you will also sample delectable sashimi, a variety of poke bowls and seasoned saimin noodles. Another favorite is Spam musubi, a handheld with a slice of Spam wedged between two blocks of rice and wrapped in nori, a Japanese seaweed.

You will also sample several beers at the Maui Brewing Company, Hawaii’s largest craft brewery. Selections range from a citrus-flavored India Pale Ale known as Big Swell to Coconut Hiwa Porter, a robust dark ale with hints of mocha.

Cruise in an open-air Zodiac along the spectacularly scenic Pali sea cliffs and snorkel the lengthy coral reef that lies just offshore. You will zip through the water on the Reef Explorer, a 60-foot custom super-raft with shaded and open-deck seating. When you arrive at the first zipline, you’ll be clipped in for the first of five exhilarating rides down the slopes of Haleakal?. You will fly over thundering waterfalls, the famed windsurfing setting at Ho’okipa Beach, and the mega-surf break at Pe’ahi, a spot with such monstrous swells that it is nicknamed “Jaws.” Many of the locations are so remote that they can only be observed from the air, as there are no roads, only dense jungle and precipitous cliffs. One such site is Keopuka Rock, a steep sliver of an island known as Jurassic Rock because it was featured in the opening sequence of the movie “Jurassic Park.” In time, you will land in a rainforest clearing and toast the experience with a glass of champagne. The landscape there is blanketed with banana trees, papayas, pineapples and lilkoi, a colorful passion flower that grows on a vine.

OVERVIEW

Paddle around Kahului Harbor in an outrigger canoe while admiring the seaside landmarks and learning about the history of the Hawaiian Islands. As an introduction, you will watch an entertaining film that describes how ancient Polynesians emigrated to the islands on double-hulled canoes using natural phenomena such as stars and ocean currents to guide them across 2,000 miles of open water. After a briefing under a traditional thatched-roof structure known as a hale, you will paddle off into Kahului’s large sheltered harbor. You may be surprised by the stability of the canoe, much of which comes from the attached outrigger hull. To ensure that you maximize the experience, paddlers from a local canoe club will accompany you and describe harbor highlights such as Kahului Beach and Ho’aloha Park. You will also see where King Kamehameha I landed in 1790 in his successful quest to unify the Hawaiian Islands.

View a watershed battle site in a verdant valley as a prelude to strolling through a botanical garden and seeing how locally grown lavender is infused into a plethora of products. Iao Valley State Park now covers a mountainous area where King Kamehameha I won the Battle of Kepaniwai in 1790 and united the Hawaiian Islands. The volcanic pinnacle known as the Iao Needle soars above the rainforest there. Similarly, the massive shield volcano Haleakala provides a gorgeous setting for the Kula Botanical Garden. As you meander its garden paths, you may pass koi ponds, walk through a covered bridge and enjoy the soothing sounds of waterfalls. A flourishing lavender farm nearby offers an equally tranquil experience. While exploring on your own, you can take in the sweeping views of Maui’s central valley and see how lavender is grown and used in products such as soaps, essential oils, jelly and candles.

Crossing the Auau Channel on an ultra-modern, luxury catamaran, you'll have plenty of room to relax or roam around with its spacious galley, sun deck and trampoline areas while you experience the essence of aloha that the staff and the Hawaiian surroundings exude. Lanai's coast, largely undeveloped, feels unspoiled and remote even though it's just seven miles from Maui. Its warm, clear waters boast world-class snorkeling and vibrant reefs teeming with marine wildlife. Lanai is also famous for its large populations of wild dolphins (spinner, bottlenose and spotted), plus toothed whales, sea turtles and an occasional Hawaiian monk seal. On the trip over, you'll be treated to a light breakfast. When it's time to snorkel, you will be outfitted with quality snorkeling gear and an expert naturalist will help you perfect your snorkeling skills and give you a brief lesson so you can identify the fish you see. Now the largest chocolate factory in Hawaii, the Maui Ku’ia Estate sustainably produces chocolates from the seeds of the cacao trees that thrive on its 20 acres of farmland. As you walk through the orchard, a guide will describe the chocolate-making process step by step, show you how the cacao seeds are harvested and explain how the farm maintains a net-zero carbon footprint through solar power and eco-friendly packaging. During the tasting that follows in the shade of a thatched hale tree house, you will sample an assortment of milk and dark chocolates that may be flavored with mango, cappuccino, peppermint and coffee. You will also have the opportunity to purchase sweets in the gift shop. To support the local community, 100% of the farm’s net profits are donated to Maui charities.

Ride on the slopes of Haleakala by Bicycle. This tour picks up at the Kahului Harbor. We then stop at our bike tour base to watch Maui Bike industry’s only safety video. Complimentary coffee, juice and snacks are provided. From there, our guided van tour up to the launch point at the 6,500 foot elevation begins. Guides will provide clients with an extensive history of Haleakala, its geology and an explanation of the rare plants and animals only found on Maui. Here clients are expertly fitted to their bicycles, given helmets and begin their 14-mile bike ride down the slopes of Haleakala, continuing through the switchbacks of Haleakala Ranch, the upcountry town of Kula and ending in Hali'i Maile from where you will depart back to the cruise ship.

This is the only place in the United State where guests are able to tour an operational pineapple plantation. This tour takes you on an exclusive experience of Maui’s pineapple heritage. You will visit the sprawling pineapple fields and processing plant to learn how the most delicious pineapples in the world are harvested, packed and shipped on this Hawaiian Island. Meander through the Maui Ocean Center for a close-up view of Hawaii’s spectacular marine life with a special emphasis on humpback whales. To better understand the diversity of species in the Hawaiian Islands, you might browse exhibits featuring America’s largest live coral display, toxic pufferfish and green sea turtles – known locally as honu. More wonders will await you at the Open Ocean display, which features a clear acrylic tunnel that allows you to look up at a multitude of sharks, stingrays and colorful fish. Many of the species, such as the bandit angelfish and freckled snake eel, are endemic to Hawaii, so observing them is even more special. Still, the Humpbacks of Hawaii exhibit in the 3D Sphere is the highlight, as it presents the complex world of humpback whales through an immersive, cutting-edge audio-video experience. It is like being transported to the depths of the ocean and encountering these behemoths face-to-face.

All tours are led by certified Marine Naturalist who provide commentary on the behaviors you witness throughout your tour and each excursion offers a unique experience. After departing the pier, you’ll take in the highlights of the island’s spectacular north shore, beginning with Makawao town, where you can still see remnants of this historic hamlet’s paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) storied past. Today, Makawao is known more as a thriving arts community. You’ll visit a local gallery displaying a wide array of works by Hawai’i’s most renowned artists, and the studio and shop of one of Maui’s foremost artisans. Enjoy a relaxing, sit-down lunch at a charming café before heading to Ho’olawa Valley, where Maui’s artists often visit for inspiration. You’ll soon understand why when you take a guided nature walk with a leading naturalist. Your destination is an idyllic waterfall overlook in the rainforest. Along the way you’ll learn about the valley’s indigenous flora and fauna. To complement the experience, you’ll enjoy a sampling of fruits and vegetables important in native Hawaiian culture. The last stop is the lovely Ho’okipa scenic lookout, where some of the best waves in Hawai‘i, and frequently green Hawaiian sea turtles (honu), are found. Come aboard as we depart from Ma'alaea Harbor aboard one of our extremely stable, 65 ft., double deck, powered catamarans and head out to our first snorkel site, world-famous Molokini Crater. Maui's iconic crescent-shaped islet is a beautiful reef known for its crystal-clear waters, abundant coral, colorful fish and resting seabirds. A protected marine conservation area, this volcanic crater is only accessible by boat with a certified tour operator. You'll snorkel about an hour at Molokini and then head to your second snorkel site, Turtle Arches, with its underwater lava formations and frequent green sea turtle sightings. Your tour will be led by our certified Marine Naturalists who have a love for our oceans and will educate you about what you'll be witnessing throughout your trip. Your adventure includes a continental breakfast, BBQ lunch, refreshments, 1 complimentary alcoholic drink (beer, wine, tropical well drinks), snorkeling gear, free reef tour by one of our Marine Naturalists, learn-to-snorkel instruction, fish ID class, Junior Naturalist program for kids, and a free wildlife poster from our Ocean Store once you return to the harbor. While browsing the boutiques in the former sugar plantation town of Pa’ia, you will get a genuine sense of its laid-back, bohemian ambiance. The shops tend to be colorful, somewhat eclectic and full of merchandise that you won’t find elsewhere as it is often made locally. A leisurely one-mile walk through a nearby rainforest will bring you to two waterfalls, one of them is Twin Falls, a gorgeous cascade that plummets into a serene pool where you may swim if you wish.
