Landausflüge in Milford Haven (Wales)
Depart Milford Haven for Pembroke Castle, the second largest castle in Wales. The castle was built in the 12th century by the Normans and was the birthplace of Henry Tudor (Henry VII). Set on a limestone hill, it guarded the strategically important town of Pembroke. The castle proved so impregnable to cannon fire during the Civil War that Cromwell’s men had to ‘starve out’ the castle’s Royalist defenders. Visit the impressive castle and enjoy a guided tour that will bring these ancient walls to life.
Afterwards, enjoy some free time in Pembroke town.
Please note: This excursion includes walking mostly at the guest's discretion, though guests with walking difficulties may not be able to fully explore the castle due to some steps and cobblestones. Other than the steps to the towers and cobblestones at the entrance, there is mainly flat terrain. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
Today visit the city of St David’s and its magnificent 12th century cathedral. This cathedral is the only one in the United Kingdom in which the reigning monarch has a permanently reserved pew.
Take the short walk to the extensive ruins of the 12th century Bishop's Palace which extend along the side of the cathedral. Even in ruin, the palace displays magnificent architectural splendour and evokes a period when religion was the order of the day and bishops were powerbrokers par excellence.
Please note: This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility as the exploration is all done on foot. The walking involves steps and is over uneven ground including inclines. Guests are recommended to wear comfortable footwear and dress in layers. Please note that the drive from the pier to St David’s takes approximately 1 hour.
