You will watch as your hostess haggles with vendors and purchases the garden-fresh items she typically needs for the day. On the ride to her home, you will share the road with rickshaws, motorbikes and even cows as you proceed into Bandra, a now posh residential area that the Portuguese founded in the 1700s. While enjoying a home-cooked meal of traditional Anglo-Indian dishes in her residence, you can expect the conversation with your hostess to be lively and candid. Feel free to ask whatever questions come to mind. After parting, you will toast the day with a cup of hot chai at a local home in Pali Village.

Gain insight into the history and development of the Jewish community in India, by visiting various synagogues and monuments. Your first stop will be the Gate of Mercy synagogue, a tiny unadorned building that is the oldest synagogue in Mumbai. The Victorian-style Magen David Synagogue presents quite a contrast, as it is fronted by pillars and is quite ornate. As more Jews came to India toward the end of the 19th century, Tifereth Synagogue was built nearby to accommodate them. You will also visit Keneseth Eliyahoo, which many consider to be the most beautiful synagogue in the city. As you will discover, the interior is as marvelous as its stone-and-brick exterior. It features decorated pillars, carved marble and a magnificent stained-glass arch rising to the high ceiling.
You’ll develop a deeper understanding into the varied religions that are represented in Mumbai through a special selection of visits to places of worship which symbolize the unique social scene found here.
Stop in the popular middle class settlement of Dadar at the recognized Guruvayur and Ram temple complex, constructed in South Indian style, it has a majestic upper complex containing five sacred gold plated urns. Opposite Dadar railway station is the impressive three spired Swaminarayan temple erected out of pink sandstone in traditional architectural style with intricate carving.
You'll make your way downtown along the coastline, passing Haji Ali mosque and tomb, where you next see the oldest sacred fire in Mumbai that was installed in 1709 and housed in the Bomanji Wadia Fire Temple. You'll be able to view from the outside as only worshippers are permitted in.
Stop for lunch at a local hotel before turning to the Jewish influence that has helped shape the historical and commercial success of Mumbai. The arrival of the Baghdadi Jews brought synagogue life to its prominence. Jacob Sassoon built the Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue in the "Fort" area. The synagogue, with its white wooden staircase, decorative floor tiles and fine stained-glass is patronized by both Baghdadi and Bene Israel communities.
While Roman Catholicism continued to thrive in the Mumbai region even after the departure of the Portuguese, the Anglican Church made its presence felt with the coming of the British in 1661. Commissioned in 1715, St. Thomas' Cathedral, the first in the city, contains fine stained-glass windows and choice objects of worship that was selected for the UNESCO Asia Pacific Conservation award.
Experience the scenic beauty and landmarks of Mumbai in a unique new way during a full-day, excursion through this bustling city.

A blend of Flemish and Norman architecture, the market has a bas-relief above its main entrance and a frieze designed by Lockyard Kipling, father of the famous Rudyard Kipling; the Kipling's' cottage still stands in the market. Crawford Market looks like something out of Victorian London, with its sweet smell of hay, mountains of fresh fruits and vegetables, and a 50-foot-high (15-metre-high) sky-lit awning. The meals are stacked on decorated handcarts, then carried to their hungry recipients dangling from the shoulder-poles and bicycle handlebars of the Dabbawalas. Tins are rarely, if ever, lost, and always find their way home again to be washed up for the next day’s lunch.

Therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique, less-touristic destinations. Guests will travel with the Dabbawalas in the baggage compartment of the local train, which is very basic, air-cooled, and with limited seating. Guests will have to stand during the train journey for a duration of approximately 15 minutes. Hygiene standards at the station, and in the train, are not the same as in western countries, and pesky hawkers and beggars may be present at the stations. Expect high temperatures and humid conditions. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
This afternoon, a culinary experience like no other awaits you!
Bombay Sweet Shop & Chef Girish Nayak
Drive for approximately 30 minutes and proceed to the Bombay Sweet Shop, an excellent initiative by young Chef Girish Nayak to bring back the sweetness to the Indian dessert culture. As various other culinary and lifestyle influences took over the authentic Indian cookery and celebrations, the 'mithai' lost its charm somewhere down the line. Chef Nayak took the onus of following a sugary sweet trail across the country, discovering recipes, to redefine modern India's perspective towards its tradition of sweets. And essentially, the diversity of Indian desserts and sweets found a new meaning and identity at Bombay Sweet Shop!
Dessert Art Demonstration
Chef Nayak initiates you into the world of traditional Indian sweets - Boondis (little syrupy balls of chickpea flour), Laddoos (made from smaller Boondis), Pedha (creamy chunks of flavoured dried milk), Patisa (flaky and sweet squares of chickpea flour) … to name a few. Try your hand at making the regional favourite 'Modaks' under the supervision of the talented young Chef. Modaks are tender dumplings made of rice flour, filled with various sweet ingredients, and steamed.
High Tea Experience & Sweets Tasting
Then, enjoy a high-tea comprising of local savouries with a twist and the famed 'chai'. As you leave, you'll find yourself drawn to the old-fashioned goodness of Indian desserts, one piece at a time… A box of 'mithai' is just that, the luxurious sweetness welcoming you to a world of sticky finger and delightful memories!
Your tour concludes with a transfer back to the pier.
Your Host: Chef Girish Nayak
Girish's interest in the culinary industry began at the age seventeen when he interned at ITC Grand Maratha in Mumbai. He enrolled himself at the Welcomgroup
Graduate School of Hotel Administration where he fell in love with the world of pastry. He developed a strong foundation in the art of baking and pastry making post the completion of his course at the Culinary Institute of America in New York. He had the opportunity to work for the famed Chef Johnny Iuzzini, the legendary Pastry Chef at Restaurant Jean George, and in New York’s finest pastry kitchens and bakeries, including Daniel, Bouchon Bakery, Bouley Bakery and Le Bernardin. Also Girish worked as a bread baker at Amy Bread Bakery in Chelsea Market before he decided to take a break and travel within India, to learn more about the techniques and history of sweet making. Post this culinary journey, he joined the Hunger Inc. team to explore working with traditional Indian sweets and mithai in a reimagined, contemporary style with their newest offering, Bombay Sweet Shop. Girish joined the team in 2018, to bring familiar flavours from around the country, using a mix of traditional and modern techniques to create an offering that is fun, seasonal and created to rekindle the love of Indian sweets
