Explore two of Kyoto's marquee attractions: the impressive Golden Pavilion and formidable Nijo Castle, a quintessential example of Momoyama architecture, which flourished 400 years ago.

An approximately 90-minute scenic drive inland introduces you to Kyoto, an immensely historical city renowned for spectacular architecture, which includes thousands of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. Upon arrival, you'll have an exterior visit of Kyoto's most famous landmark, Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion). Built by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu as a villa in 1397, the three-story home was converted to a temple by Yoshimitsu's son. The Golden Pavilion follows the Shinden style of the Heian Period by being positioned at the edge of a tranquil pond. The three-story Chinese-influenced Golden Pavilion has delicately curving roofs, with the walls and eaves of the second and third stories covered in shimmering gold leaf. View the exterior of the pavilion and walk through the peaceful gardens, marveling at the mirror reflection of the temple on the still pond.

After a stop for lunch at a local restaurant, you'll head for Nijo Castle where more history awaits. This impressive fortification made of cypress wood was built in 1603 as the residence of the Tokugawa clan. An esteemed UNESCO World Heritage site, the castle is protected by a moat, stone walls, and ingenious nightingale floors, which chirp like a bird when walked upon to alert the guards of potential intruders. Despite its defensive elements, the castle was primarily a home. It's adorned with wooden carvings, artistically painted sliding doors and expansive tatami rooms, decorated in the traditional style at the time.

Kyoto, Japanese Dinner with Geisha Performance

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1 hour - 45 minutes drive to the dinner venue. Upon arrival, you are seated for a Japanese Kaiseki Style dinner. During dinner, you are treated to an authentic Geisha performance, a rare treat even for the Japanese people due to its limited public access and a traditional business custom prohibiting first-time visitors from making reservations. In honour of your visit tonight, you have been granted special access to this unique occasion.

About the Geisha Performance

Geishas are professional entertainers who attend to guests during meals and other occasions, and have been wearing kimonos since the Edo Period (1603-1867). They are regarded as 'traditional and iconic Japanese women' who have learned graceful behaviour, traditional customs, and various Japanese arts such as dancing and playing musical instruments. The role of the Geisha is to make guests feel at ease with conversation, using special dialects, drinking games, and dance performances. At the conclusion of this special occasion, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 75-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 219 yards (about 200 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 10 steps at the restaurant. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible. Guests are advised to wear smart-casual, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, bottled water, and Japanese Yen or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Although credit cards are mostly accepted, Japanese Yen is required for any purchases; guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior to the cruise. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Additional beverages are available at the restaurant at each guest’s own expense. This tour is available in the evening only. The driving time between the pier and sites visited is approximately 1 hour - 45 minutes in each direction. The tour sequence may vary. Explore the legends and local shoppes of Osaka during this bespoke, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Osaka, Katsuoji Temple, Complimentary Daruma Doll

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to the Katsuoji Temple, an historic temple founded in 727 A.D. According to legend, Katsuoji has come to be known as the ‘winning temple’ because its faithful came here to pray for success or victory in their endeavors. Katsuo-ji is also called the ‘Winning Daruma Doll Temple’. A ‘Daruma’ is a round doll with no eyes. Followers purchase them, make a wish, and draw one eye on their dolls. When their wish comes true, they draw the other eye on their dolls and return them to the temple. During your visit, see hundreds of Daruma dolls lined up in a small hall. Following your visit, receive a complimentary Daruma doll, then re-board your coach and transfer to the Kuromon Market.

Kuromon Market, Diverse Shoppes, Food, Clothing, Housewares

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour. This bustling, approximately 1,903-foot-long (about 580-metre-long) shopping street houses many as 170 shoppes selling fresh vegetables, fruit, fish, meats, traditional sweets, clothing, and housewares. Kuromon is called Osaka’s ‘Minami Kitchen’, as perishable foods account for half of the goods on sale in the street. Due to the freshness and variety of its food, Kuromon is a beacon for profession chefs and locals, especially on Saturday when all its shoppes hold sales. Following a guided walking tour of the market, enjoy some free time for independent shopping and exploration. Afterward, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.86 miles (about three kilometres), at times over uneven, cobblestone, and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 10 steps at the Kuromon Market, and 200 steps at the Katsuoji Temple. Walking at the Kuromon Market is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, bottled water, and Japanese Yen or credit cards for purchases from the ship. Although credit cards are mostly accepted, Japanese Yen is required for any purchases; guests are advised to exchange money at the airport prior to the cruise. Proper attire is required to enter temples and shrines; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Osaka, Tenryu-ji Temple

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Arashiyama. Upon arrival, your first stop is at Tenryu-ji, the head temple of the Tenryu branch of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. The temple was founded by Ashikaga Takauji in 1339, primarily to venerate Gautama Buddha, and its first chief priest was Muso Soseki. Construction was completed in 1345. Due to its connection to both the Ashikaga family and Emperor Go-Daigo, the Tenryu-ji Temple is held in extremely high esteem, and ranked number one among Kyoto's so-called ‘Five Mountains’. In 1994, it was designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the ‘Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto’. Leaving the temple, re-board your coach and head to the Bamboo Forest.

Some free time is made available to browse for souvenirs of your visit amongst the local vendors and explore the Arishiyama area at your leisure. Next, re-board your coach and proceed for a Japanese lunch at a local restaurant.

It is approximately 41 feet (about 12.5 metres) in height, and the second-and-third storeys are covered with approximately two tons (about 1.8 metric tons) of pure gold foil. The mirror reflection on the still pond in the garden is a marvellous site to behold. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier.

S.A.L.T. Essential Tastes: Celebrating the Cuisine of Osaka and the Science of Umami
Classic - Optional Excursion
Dauer: 5.75 Stunden
Code: OSA-S

Japan is home to one of the most exciting, varied and endlessly delicious culinary scenes on the planet. It's also famously challenging to explore on your own. To help us understand and appreciate this most complex and compelling cuisine we travel and eat our way through the vibrant port city of Osaka.

Your Host, a Food and Sake Expert and Writer Based in Tokyo

Melinda Joe’s passion for Japanese food and culinary culture brought her to Tokyo where she consults and writes about restaurants, food  culture, and sake for a variety of publications and is a columnist for The Japan Times.

Sakai City – The Art of Japanese Knives

We begin our day in Sakai, just south of Osaka, to visit the Sakai Denshokan, a museum dedicated to one of the city’s traditional crafts – knife making. Sakai knives are coveted by chefs from around the world who value their precision and quality as well as the history and lore surrounding these special tools. This is followed by a visit to a famous and ancient producer of Japanese knives. We’ll learn about the craft of hand-forged knives, central to the cooking of Japan, a tradition that dates to the 15th century, and hear from the artisans at work. Of course, you will have a chance to take home one of these pieces of functional art.

At these stops, we’ll also meet Eric Chevallier, a French-born bladesmith and Japanese knife expert and connoisseur who will talk about the role these tools play in the cuisine.

Introduction to Kombu – Kombu Facility

We follow this with an exploration of kombu (sea kelp), a key ingredient in dashi, the basic building block of Japanese cuisine. With a visit to a top kombu facility, we see how the product is sourced and used in many dishes and our chef guide explains the world of umami, or the “fifth taste,” a crucial element of Japanese cooking that has also influenced top chefs and restaurateurs globally.

Seasonal and Regional Lunch at a Michelin-starred Restaurant

We continue these themes of umami and regionality at Ajikitcho Bunbu-an, a renowned kaiseki restaurant with one Michelin star. Second-generation chef Ryusuke Nakatani’s multi-course hyper-seasonal menu is both traditional and inventive. Located centrally, the restaurant has a rural and transporting feeling thanks to its construction of timber and stone as well as an elegant and serene garden with a stone alley and bamboo fence. Here, the ingredients and exquisite presentation encourages you to “take in the feeling of each Japanese season with all of your five senses.”

This exploration of umami and an appreciation of many aspects of Japanese cuisine seen through the food and traditions of this city is truly a special insider's look at this most fascinating cuisine and culture that continues to inspire and delight chefs and taste-seekers everywhere.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal to moderate amount of walking and standing with some steps to negotiate at the visited sites and a few to get on/off the coach. Heian Jingu Shrine

Upon arrival in Kyoto, explore the city and its surrounds at your own pace. Your first stop is at the Heian Jingu Shrine (Shrine of Peace). The castle, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, is protected by a moat, stone walls, and ingenious nightingale floors, which chirp like a bird when walked upon to alert the guards of potential intruders. It is approximately 41 feet (about 12.5 metres) in height, and the second-and-third storeys are covered with approximately two tons (about 1.8 metric tons) of pure gold foil. The mirror reflection on the still pond in the garden is a marvellous site to behold. At the conclusion of your Silver Shore Privato excursion, re-board your private car and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This Silver Shore Privato tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.24 miles (about two kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, 10 steps at the Heian Jingu Shrine, 20 steps at the Nijo Castle, and 50 steps at the Golden Pavilion. Guests must remove their shoes before entering the Ninomaru Palace at the Nijo Castle. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. Guests must be at least 20 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Infrastructure in Osaka may be basic, and local conditions may be challenging; coaches, guides, hotels, restaurants, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other ports. Therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique, less-touristic destinations. The cost of providing a tour programme in this area is proportionately more expensive than in neighbouring regions, as vehicles and guides are brought in from the whole region. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Silver Shore Privato: Kyoto by Van with Driver and Guide
Privato
Dauer: 9.5 Stunden
Code: OSA-J

Explore the iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites and important cultural properties of Kyoto during this panoramic, full-day, Silver Shore Privato sightseeing tour via private van.

Osaka, Kyoto

Depart the pier with your driver and guide in a private, air-conditioned van and begin your Silver Shore Privato tour with a scenic, approximately two-hour drive to historic Kyoto. Once the ancient capital of Japan, Kyoto is a sophisticated city on the island of Honshu with thousands of classical Buddhist temples. It is also home to many gardens, Shinto shrines, palaces, and traditional wooden houses, a number of which have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Heian Jingu Shrine

Upon arrival in Kyoto, explore the city and its surrounds at your own pace. Your first stop is at the Heian Jingu Shrine (Shrine of Peace). Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, it was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto (Heian-Kyo capital). The Heian Shrine is dedicated to two emperors: Emperor Kammu, the first emperor to rule Kyoto, and Emperor Komei, the last emperor to live out his reign in the city. Following your visit, re-board your van and head to the Nijo Castle.

Nijo Castle, Chinese Gate, Ninomaru Palace & Garden

The Nijo Castle is a fortification of cypress wood built in 1603 as the residence of Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Hon-maru (Main Court) burned down in 1788. The only original part remaining is the Ninomaru (Second Court). The present 'Hon-maru', built in 1827, is a replica of the one that originally stood on the grounds of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The castle, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, is protected by a moat, stone walls, and ingenious nightingale floors, which chirp like a bird when walked upon to alert the guards of potential intruders. It is also renowned for its many cultural treasures dating from the 16th-century Momoyama Era, including the Karamon (Chinese Gate) and Ninomaru Palace & Garden.

Local Restaurant, Japanese Lunch, Golden Pavilion

After a stop for a Japanese, set-menu lunch at a local restaurant, transfer to the Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion) for an exterior visit. Teppanyaki Demo & Dinner
Classic - Optional Excursion
Dauer: 4.0 Stunden
Code: OSA-H

Embrace the exquisite flavours of an authentic, Teppanyaki-style dinner during this savoury, half-day epicurean excursion and city tour.

Teppanyaki-Style Restaurant & Dinner

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to a Teppanyaki restaurant. Teppanyaki is a style of Japanese cuisine in which an iron griddle is utilised to cook food. The word ‘Teppanyaki’ is derived from ‘teppan’, which means iron plate, and ‘yaki,’ which means grilled, broiled, or pan-fried. On this tour, the chef cooks meats and vegetables for you and right in front of you. Upon arrival, you are welcomed and seated for your Teppanyaki-style meal, where the food is freshly-prepared in your presence and served on heated iron plates. After this delightful repast, re-board your coach for a short sightseeing tour of Osaka.

Tsutenkaku Tower, Panoramic Views, Osaka City, Awaji Island, Rokko and Ikoma Mountains

From your coach see the famous Tsutenkaku Tower, built in 1912 and modelled after the Eiffel Tower of Paris. At the time of its construction, the approximately 210-foot-high (about 64-metre-high) Tsutenkaku Tower was the tallest tower in Asia and a symbol of Osaka.  Rebuilt in 1956, the present-day, approximately 338-foot-high (about 103-metre-high) Tsutenkaku Tower offers sweeping panoramic vistas over Osaka City, Awaji Island, and the Rokko and Ikoma mountain ranges. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head to the Dotonbori District, located near Osaka’s city centre.

Dotonbori District

One of the symbols of Osaka and beloved by residents, Dotonbori is a dense area of restaurants and amusement spots located along the south bank of the Dotonbori Canal. Osaka is a food-lover's delight, and neon-lit Dotonbori offers hundreds of eateries. The area began as an entertainment district and still has Bunraku (puppet show) theatres, halls for Rakugo (comic story-telling) and, of course, movie theatres. The area is often featured in both domestic and foreign films, as it typifies the lively spirit of Osaka. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 327 yards (about 300 metres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the restaurant; a lift is available at the restaurant. Proper attire is required to enter temples and shrines; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. Guests must be at least 12 years old to participate on this tour; minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian over 18 years old. This may be reflected in the prices of the tours, and we thank you for your understanding. Additional food and beverages are available at the restaurant at each guest’s own expense. This tour is available in the evening only. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

The View of Osaka
Classic - Included Excursion
Dauer: 4.0 Stunden
Code: OSA-D

Experience the stunning beauty and history of Osaka from two unique perspectives during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Shitenno-ji Temple, 6th-Century Temple Buildings

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the Shitenno-ji Temple, built in the late-6th century by a son of Emperor Yomei. One of Japan's oldest temples, Shittenno-ji was the first to be built by the state and founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who supported the introduction of Buddhism into Japan. Whilst several of the temple's buildings have burned down several times throughout the centuries, they have always been carefully reconstructed to reflect the original, 6th-century design.

Outer Temple Grounds, Interior Tour, Gokuraku-jodo Garden, Pagoda, Main Hall, Kannon Statue

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour around the outer temple grounds. Once inside the temple, see the Gokuraku-jodo Garden, the pebble-covered courtyard with a five-storey pagoda, and the Main Hall where Prince Shotoku is enshrined as a statue of Kannon. Following your visit, re-board your coach and drive to the Umeda area for a visit to the Umeda Sky Building.

Umeda Sky Building, 40-Storey Towers, Bridges, Escalator, Sky Walk, Panoramic Views Over Osaka

The Umeda Sky Building is amongst the tallest buildings in Osaka and one of its most recognisable landmarks. At a height of approximately 567 feet (173 metres), the building consists of two, 40-storey towers that connect at their two uppermost stories, with bridges and an escalator for crossing the wide, atrium-like space in the centre. The highlight of your tour is a visit to the Sky Walk, where you can enjoy spectacular, 360-degree panoramic views overlooking Osaka. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 40-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.6 miles (about one kilometre), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 30 steps inside the Shitenno-ji Temple; a lift is available at the Umeda Sky Building. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, a sweater or light jacket, bottled water, and Japanese Yen or credit cards for purchases from the ship.
