Makola Salt Glacier Exploration
Expedition – Included Excursion
Dauer: 4.0 Stunden
Code: PNR-EXP-01

A tour to the Salt Glacier of Makola offers a unique and fascinating experience for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Located in the heard of the Congo Basin, the Salt Glacier is a natural geological formation created by centuries of salt deposits, slowly pushed to the surface through tectonic activity. The result is a surreal landscape of shimmering salt-encrusted ground resembling a glacier but made-entirely of salt instead of ice.

Visitors can walk across the expansive flats, taking in the dazzling white formations that glimmer in the sunlight. The salt beds stretch for miles, creating a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. Your guide will explain the natural processes that formed the glacier and the history of the local communities of salt extraction, which has been integral to their way of life and provide insight into how the salt trade has historically supported the region’s economy.

Guests will enjoy some free time to roam and climb the salt glacier before returning to the port in Pointe Noir.

Please note: Republic of Congo is a very-low-income country with very basic infrastructure, and vastly different to the western culture mentality. Local conditions may be challenging; therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and somewhat remote destinations. Coaches, guides, equipment, and services are the best-available in the area, but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions. A moderate amount of walking to fully-explore the sites visited; however, walking and climbing the salt glacier is at the discretion of each guest. The ground around the glacier is uneven, damp grounds making this very difficult for guests with mobility issues. Good, closed toes walking shoes are required for guests intending to climb the glacier. Transfer time each direction is approx. 40/45 minutes. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, sun protection and insect repellant is recommended. Anticipate high temperatures and humidity and we recommend staying hydrated by bringing your water bottle.
