Sie fahren etwa eine Stunde nach San Juan, das geographische Zentrum Chiles, 56 km von Punta Arenas entfernt. Nach einem kurzen Fotostopp Weiterfahrt zum Fort Bulnes, dem ersten chilenischen Außenposten im Gebiet der Magellanstraße. Er war 1843 unter Präsident Bulnes errichtet worden, der dieses südliche Territorium für Chile beanspruchen wollte. Die Straße zum gut erhaltenen, historischen Fort führt durch ursprüngliche Wälder mit Lenga- und Nirre-Bäumen sowie Calafate-Büschen mit schmackhaften Früchten, die typisch für diese Region sind. Aufenthalt gut 1 Std., danach Weiterfahrt zum Besucherbereich des geschützten Gebietes "Estrecho de Magallanes" (Magellanstraßen-Park). Sie unternehmen eine etwa 1-stündige Wanderung entlang des Küstenpfades, der eine Länge von 1,5 km hat, einen mittleren bis niedrigen Schwierigkeitsgrad aufweist und zu drei Aussichtspunkten führt. Anschließend erfolgt dann wieder die Rückfahrt zum Schiff.

Die "Schaf-Barone" dieser Zeit erbauten riesige Herrenhäuser, die heute zu den nationalen Baudenkmälern zählen. Heutzutage ist Punta Arenas nicht nur Zentrum für Schafzucht, sondern auch zollfreie Zone und Zentrum der südlichen Fischindustrie. Zunächst fahren Sie zu einem nahe gelegenen Aussichtspunkt mit einzigartigem Blick auf die Stadt und die Magellanstraße und an klaren Tagen sogar bis Feuerland. Sie besichtigen das Museo Salesiano Marggiorino Borgatello, dessen Ausstellung über das Leben der Ureinwohner Feuerlands, die regionale Flora und Fauna sowie die koloniale Geschichte der Region informiert. Anschließend besuchen Sie den Friedhof mit eindrucksvollen Grabmälern sowie den Hauptplatz Plaza de Armas mit der Statue von Hernando de Magellanes. Rückkehr zum Schiff.

Punta Arenas, Hauptstadt der Magellanregion, zählt etwa 150.000 Einwohner. Durch ihre günstige Lage ist die Stadt bis heute Anlaufstelle für Handelsschiffe und blickt auf eine lange Seefahrtsgeschichte zurück. Aufgrund der expandierenden Schafzucht erfuhr Punta Arenas in der Vergangenheit einen enormen Aufschwung. Während Ihrer Stadtrundfahrt fahren Sie zunächst zum Museumsschiff Nao Victoria, dem eindrucksvollen Nachbau des berühmten Schiffes, mit dem Magellan die Welt umsegelte. Anschließend erreichen Sie den hochgelegenen Aussichtspunkt "Cerro La Cruz". Von hier aus genießen Sie schöne Ausblicke auf  die Stadt und die Magellanstraße. Weiter geht es zum zentralen Platz der Stadt, der "Plaza de Armas", der von Herrenhäusern der reichen Schafzüchterfamilien aus dem 19. Jh. gesäumt wird. Die prächtigen Bürgerhäuser der Großgrundbesitzer Braun-Menéndez und Nogueira künden vom einstigen märchenhaften Reichtum der Stadt. In der Mitte des Platzes grüßt eine Magellan-Statue die Seefahrer. Nach einem Spaziergang über den Platz gehen Sie zum Museum del Recuerdo, in dem der Geist der Blütezeit der Stadt allgegenwärtig ist. Nach der Besichtigung kehren Sie zum Hafen zurück.

Ein Ausflug für sportliche Gäste. Vom Hafen aus fahren Sie etwas mehr als eine halbe Stunde mit dem Bus, teils über ungeteerte Straßen, in das nahe gelegene Waldreservat Magallanes. Der Naturpark Reserva Forestal Magallanes liegt nur 9 km westlich von Punta Arenas entfernt, bietet 5 Wanderwege und belohnt Sie bei gutem Wetter mit einem Ausblick auf Punta Arenas, die Magellanstraße und Feuerland. Ihnen wird während der Tour die Vielfalt landestypischer Flora und Fauna nahegebracht. Die Wasserquellen innerhalb des Parks versorgen die Region rund um Punta Arenas mit Trinkwasser. Sie unternehmen eine etwa 1,5-stündige Wanderung durch das Reservat mit Fotopausen. Anschließend Rückfahrt zum Hafen.

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive northwest along the endless Patagonian pampas en route to the charming community of Rio Verde, and a visit to Estancia Olga Teresa. This estancia dates from 1920, and is still owned by the English- and French-speaking descendants of the original owner's family. A visit here offers a unique opportunity to learn about the daily life and activities of the huaso (cowboy), and a bit about the history of the people from the Chilean Patagonia.  

Guided Estancia Tour and Sheep-Shearing Demonstration

Upon arrival to the farm, you are welcomed to the property and escorted on a guided walking tour highlighting the various activities that take place on the farm and a sheep-shearing demonstration conducted in the barn.

Palomares Mountains, Condors, Patagonian Barbecue Lunch

In addition to the farming activities on the ranch, you can observe the nearby Palomares Mountains in the distance, home to an impressive colony of condors nesting in the upper-reaches of caves. Close-range encounters with these mighty birds are few-and-far between. However, those fortunate enough to participate on this tour, and fit enough to reach the upper levels of the hills, may be treated to a look at these majestic birds. Following your tour, proceed for a typical Patagonian barbecue lunch served al fresco, and accompanied by a Pisco sour, Chilean wine and splendid views of your surrounds. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 219 yards-273 yards (about 200 metres-250 metres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces and hills, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests prone to motion sickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Weather is unpredictable in this region, and some showers and strong winds can be expected at any time of the year. Guests are advised to wear warm, layered clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection, gloves and a weatherproof jacket from the ship. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. The driving time between the pier and Estancia Olga Teresa is approximately 1.5 hours in each direction. Hiking the Magellan’s Strait Park

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive south to Magellan’s Strait Park along a beautiful, picturesque road that skirts the Strait of Magellan. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of Fort Bulnes, a National Monument and the first Chilean settlement on the Strait of Magellan. Bulnes was founded in 1843 by 22 adventurers who took possession of the Strait of Magellan on behalf of the Chilean government. They named the area after Manuel Bulnes, president of the young Republic of Chile, and originally built the fort to protect Southern Chile and the Strait of Magellan from claims by other countries. Sites to be seen during your tour include the church, chaplain's quarters, jail, powder magazine, post office, and stables.

Guided Hike, Native Forest, Coastal Shores, Strait of Magellan, Bays, Visitor’s Centre, Refreshments

Next, take a guided hike from Fort Bulnes to the Visitor’s Centre of Magellan’s Strait Park. Along the way, your panoramic hike passes through the native forest and along the coastal shores of the legendary Strait of Magellan, with breath-taking panoramic vistas at every turn. Upon arrival at the Visitor’s Centre, enjoy the local drink, a calafate sour, and snacks, along with exquisite views of the Strait of Magellan and nearby bays. At the conclusion of your tour, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.  

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of hiking for approximately 1.7 miles (about 2.8 kilometres), at times over uneven, gravel, grassy, and natural surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 15 steps at the Magellan’s Strait Visitor’s Centre. This tour is suitable for active guests who are in good physical condition and can hike for long distances. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Punta Arenas

Leave the pier and head for a short sightseeing drive of the city and to the observation point located at Cerro De La Cruz, where a short stop will be made to enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Straits of Magellan. Afterwards, head to a local frural house to enjoy a Patagonian Asado.

Local Lunch

Upon arrival, share an aperitif and participate in the preparation of a Patagonian lamb barbecue while sharing with the hostesses and learning about the local culture, immigration stories and history of the region. Probably you will also learn the reason local people of Punta Arenas feel that they leave in an Independent Region, far from the rest of the country and even why they have their own flag. Enjoy a tasty home-made barbecue.

At agreed time, leave the house and head to the Main Plaza to have a look to the local monuments and also the chance to stroll at the small handicraft stalls before returning to the ship.

Explore beautiful Magdalena Island, a natural reserve created to protect Magellan Penguins, Cormorants, and other indigenous birds. Punta Arenas is the launching point for a boat trip to the Isla Magdalena to see the Magellanic penguins at the Monumento Natural Los Pingúinos. A single trail, marked off by rope, is accessible to humans to discover the teeming birdlife here.

Begin your tour with a short drive to the local pier, boarding your boat to navigate across the Strait of Magellan to reach Magdalena Island. Upon arriving, enjoy the rare opportunity to observe one of the largest penguin colonies in Southern Chile. There is also time to explore the reserve's picturesque lighthouse and enjoy panoramic views of the area.

Make sure to bring along warm clothing, even in summer; the island can be chilly, particularly if a breeze is blowing across the water.

Punta Arenas, with a population of 110,000, is the capital of the Magallanes and Antarctic Region, and it is Patagonia's most important city; its streets hum with activity and its airport and seaports bustle with traffic. The town has made a living from coal mines, wool production, oil, fishing, and as a service centre for cargo ships.


Cerro De La Cruz

The tour commences with a drive from the pier through the city of Punta Arenas to the observation point located at Cerro De La Cruz, where a short stop will be made to enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the city and the Straits of Magellan.


Maggiorino Borgatello Salesian Museum

Drive to the Maggiorino Borgatello Salesian Museum, which was created by the Salesian missionaries, where exhibits illustrating the habitat and history of Patagonia's aboriginal people and the region's natural history can be seen. The museum consists of 3 floors which are only accessible by stairs and most explanations are only written in Spanish.


Patagonia Institute

Continue with a visit of Patagonia Institute, an open-air museum with horse-drawn carts, farm machinery, and other items from the golden age of Punta Arenas. Due to the Patagonia Institute being an outdoor museum it is necessary to walk around on uneven terrain in order to visit it.


Plaza de Armas

Finally drive to the city centre and visit the Plaza de Armas, where a statue of Magellan with a mermaid and two Fuegian Indians at his feet can be seen. Punta Arenas' earliest wealth is reflected in the grand stone mansions that encircle this square, which were built with earnings from the sheep ranches of the late 1800s.


Following this visit, make the return drive to the pier in order to re-join the ship.

Depart the pier for the brief transfer to the airport for your chartered, one-hour flight to Puerto Natales. Upon arrival, board a bus for the scenic, 2-hour drive north through picturesque rolling pampas and distant mountain ranges en route to Porteria Serrano, one of the entrances to Torres del Paine National Park. Your drive within the park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, offers breath taking panoramic vistas in all directions. Around this area of Serrano, lunch will be served with the best views of the park.

Salto Grande Waterfall and Lunch

Drive to the Salto Grande Waterfall. Upon arrival, take an approximate 50-minute hike amidst the rugged beauty surrounding this scenic locale.

Lake Nordenskjold

Established in 1959, this 598,338-acre (242,138-hectare) park was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978. Your drive within the park offers incredible vistas. Along the way, a stop is made at the Lake Nordenskjold Lookout for spectacular views of the famous jagged spires that grace numerous publications.

Lastly, a stop will be made at Cerro Castillo for souvenirs before the drive to the Puerto Natales Airport for your return flight to the pier to re-join the ship.
