Ermoupoli City Walking Tour

Depart the pier for your guided walking tour through Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros. The largest city in the Cyclades, Ermoupoli is built like an amphitheatre around its harbour, and is crowned by the twin peaks of Ano Syros to the north and the Ortodox Vrontado to the south. The city was rebuilt in the early-mid-19th century, and boasts gorgeous Neo-Classical architecture and monuments.

St. Nicholas Church and Apollon Theatre

Your first stop is at the St. Nicholas Church, followed by the Unknown Soldier Monument. From here, stroll amongst the lovely villas of the Vaporia area, also known as 'Little Venice', then pass by the impressive Apollo Theatre, the first opera house of Greece.

Miaoulis Square and Church of the Assumption

Next, continue to Miaoulis Square with its monumental marble platform built for the Syros Philharmonic and Town Hall. Stop by the first high school of modern Greece and a colourful shopping area, then enter the Church of the Assumption to marvel at a masterpiece of religious art, an icon by the painter El Greco. At the conclusion of your tour, you may remain in town at your leisure before returning to the pier on-foot.

Resurrection Hill & Ano Syros
Classic - Included Excursion
Dauer: 2.0 Stunden
Code: JSY-E

Discover the two iconic hills and settlements of Syros during this panoramic sightseeing excursion.

Syros, Resurrection Hill, Orthodox Church of the Resurrection, Aegean Sea, Ermoupolis

Depart the pier for the short drive to Resurrection Hill. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Orthodox Church of the Resurrection. Located on the top of the hill, the church overlooks the Aegean Sea and city of Ermoupolis unfolding beneath. The church was built in 1870, on the spot where a memorial to the Greek Revolution of 1821 was erected and designed by the architect Dimitris Eleftheriadis. Since it's the same height as the Church of St. George in the neighbouring hill of Ano Syros, this edifice is one of Syros' iconic landmarks. Following your church visit, some free time is made available to explore your surrounds, and enjoy breath-taking panoramic vistas of the coast and Aegean Sea.

Ano Syros Village, Steps, White Houses and Arches

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the hilltop village of Ano Syros. Founded in 1200 by the Venetians and inhabited throughout the course of history, the village maintains its Catholic and medieval character to this day. The city is characterised by countless steps that pass by the white houses and arches at the edge of the hill, which leads to the top of the village. Following your guided walking tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2.5 miles (about 4 kilometres) at times over uneven and natural surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 200 steps at Ano Syros. Walking at Resurrection Hill is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and local currency for purchases from the ship. This tour does not operate on Easter Sunday. Photography/videography is not permitted inside of the Church of the Resurrection. The tour sequence and timings may vary to avoid overcrowding at the sites visited.
