Ulukhahtok is situated on the shores of the Amundsen Gulf and the hamlet is surrounded by rugged tundra and Artic landscape. The population of Ulukhahtok is predominantly Unuit and the community is small with approx. 500 residents. The local economy traditionally revolves around hunting, fishing, and trapping. Ulukhatok is a vibrant community with a rich cultural heritage that continues to thrive despite the challenges posed by its remote Arctic location. The residents are deeply connected to their land and traditions. Enjoy a guided walk-through town, interact with the locals, and enjoy some cultural performances. The community is also known for its arts and crafts, particularly print making and carving which you can observe at the local craft market.
Please note: A moderate amount of walking to fully-explore the community, however walking in Ulukhahtok is at the discretion of each guest. Local infrastructure is basic, and local road conditions are unpredictable, note roads are only partly paved, with some inclines and steps. Guides, equipment, and services are the best-available but may not be up to the standards of those found on other excursions therefore, we urge flexibility and understanding as we visit unique and remote destinations. Dress in layers with sturdy, closed toe walking shoes/boots, and bring sun protection, insect repellent, weatherproof jacket, hat, and scarf.
