Gain an appreciation for the influence of Andrea Bocelli’s family at a private piano concert at their acclaimed Tuscan restaurant, followed by a tasting of Bocelli wines during lunch. For a glimpse into the history of Tuscany, you will first visit the hilltop town of Volterra. Known for its Etruscan walls, parts of which still remain, Volterra is immensely historical, as you will discover at sites such as its beautifully preserved Roman theater. A short drive through the gorgeous countryside will bring you to Officine Bocelli, the Bocelli family-owned restaurant near Andrea’s birthplace. As a prelude to lunch, you will sit in on a piano concert and browse the on-site museum dedicated to Andrea’s illustrious singing career. During the four-course Tuscan meal that follows, you will sample a selection of wines produced at the Bocelli winery, which occupies part of an estate the family has owned since 1730. The wines may include a lush Sangiovese and crisp Pinot Grigio.
HIGHLIGHTS
• Enjoy a private piano concert at a restaurant that Andrea Bocelli’s family owns.
• Browse a museum dedicated to Andrea Bocelli’s extraordinary life and career.
• Savor a four-course lunch accompanied by wines that the Bocelli family produces.
• Explore the historical Tuscan town of Volterra.
Gain an understanding and appreciation of the far-reaching influence of Andrea Bocelli’s family, beginning with a concert by excellent artists that surrounds the Bocelli’s world. The performance will be held in Villa Bertelli, a stately 19th-century residence in the seaside Tuscan town of Forte Dei Marmi. Guests will join a beautiful concert performed by a professional pianist and a lyric/pop singer. At the nearby Alpemare Beach Club, which the Bocellis completely renovated, you will be treated to a tasting of wines from the Bocelli vineyards. The wines will be paired with a Tuscan appetizer, a perfect way to whet your appetite for the seafood lunch that will follow. The views will be as inspired as the cuisine, as the beach club overlooks a pristine stretch of sand and offers panoramic views of the majestic Apuan Alps. Guests will also visit Pietrasanta, the jewel of Versilia! Pietrasanta is a city of art that combine medieval architectures, renaissance sculptures and contemporary exhibitions.
Leaving Livorno, you will travel north for 1.5 hours, passing the coastal area of Versilia until reaching La Spezia where you'll begin your exploration to the Cinque Terre: a National Park protected by UNESCO. Weather permitting you will enjoy a scenic cruise or a ride by train till Monterosso al Mare. Here you will have plenty of free time to enjoy a stroll around its narrow streets, to explore the tiny shops, have lunch on your own and after a tasting of the local wine. By boat or train you will reach the fishing village of Vernazza, where you'll enjoy time at leisure. Then you will re-board a boat or a local train back to La Spezia where your motorcoach is waiting for you for the return drive to Livorno.
Spend free time exploring Vernazza and Riomaggiore, two spectacularly beautiful coastal villages in Cinque Terre, an area so scenic that UNESCO named it a World Heritage site.
After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely picturesque drive to Vernazza, one of five coastal villages within Cinque Terre. All of them lie within the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Terre National Park, an area that UNESCO has deemed a World Heritage site for being a landscape of great scenic and cultural value.
Arguably the most photogenic of the villages, Vernazza is a wonderful setting to enjoy free time, meandering about wherever you please. The main square is a great place to start exploring, as the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia stands here overlooking the natural harbor. Built in the Gothic-Ligurian style, the church features an octagonal bell tower that can't be missed, making it even easier to find your way around the pastel-colored town.
After a few hours strolling the narrow lanes of Vernazza, you will drive on to Riomaggiore, another absolutely gorgeous coastal village that clings to a steep hillside. The largest of the five villages, Riomaggiore has also been built into a steep rocky hillside, affording magnificent views of the sea.
Because of its size, Riomaggiore offers a few more points of interest than Vernazza. A 13th century castle looms over the historical center, the Oratory of St. Mary Assumption holds an intriguing 15th-century triptych and the St. John the Baptist church is ornamented with black-and-white marble.
Almost perfectly preserved Lucca still resides within high walls, though they are now topped by green parkland. Take a guided walk through the old town, with its medieval towers and nearly 100 churches. Stroll from piazza to piazza, and absorb the city’s history through its architecture. The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral, dates from the 12th century and features a façade with elaborate reliefs and columns.
The Gothic interior includes an image of Christ on the cross, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper. You’ll have free time in Lucca to explore, do some shopping, or sample the local cuisine.
Once a powerful maritime republic, and a rival to Genoa and Venice, Pisa offers a Renaissance splendor of its own. A short, guided walk leads to the dramatic Miracle Square, with an array of elegant buildings in Pisa’s own Romanesque style.
Here you’ll find the Campo Santo, a cemetery with some handsome architecture; the Baptistery, with a statue of St. John the Baptist on top of its dome; and the Duomo, Pisa’s medieval cathedral. You’ll recognize its freestanding bell tower immediately as the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Galileo is said to have used the 180-foot tower during his experiments with gravity. Today it leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. Recently reopened, admittance to the tower is limited and is not included in this excursion.
Explore the pastel-colored town of Lerici as a prelude to cruising around the islands in the surrounding Bay of La Spezia. Although a medieval castle dominates Lerici, there is much more to see, including the 13th-century Oratory of San Rocco and former Jewish quarter. The narrow streets are wonderfully atmospheric with fine shops characteristic of the Italian Riviera. In time, you will board a private boat for an enlightening cruise around the bay, which is also known as Poet’s Gulf in reference to Lerici once being a celebrated enclave for poets and writers. Lord Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley and D.H. Lawrence were all inspired by the setting. You will be treated to close-up views of the islands Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto in the bay’s westernmost part. UNESCO deemed them and the neighboring town of Portovenere a World Heritage site for their scenic and cultural value. You will discover Portovenere’s other charms during free time there.

Drive into the Apuan Alps to behold the quarries where Carrara marble has been excavated for centuries and then enjoy a sampling of a local Tuscan delicacy.
After departing from the pier, you will drive toward the Apuan Alps, a mountain range where high-quality marble has been quarried for centuries. What appears to be snow from a distance is actually white marble and marble dust on the mountains’ bare quarried faces.
As you approach the quarries, you will switch vehicles and continue on in a Jeep that is ideally suited for the rugged terrain. During the drive through the quarries, your escort will elaborate on the excavation process and how it has changed over the centuries.
In Roman times, Carrara marble was extracted by hand and shipped throughout Italy to build palaces and monuments. During the Renaissance, Michelangelo came to these quarries to find marble for masterpieces such as the Pietà and David. The artist favored the whitest, most finely veined marble from the Serra gorge. Today, beefy bulldozers and diamond-edged cutting equipment are used to excavate the marble.
But marble isn’t the only product synonymous with this area, as you will discover at a lard sampling. While it may not sound appetizing, the local Colonnata lard, which is pork back fat, is considered a delicacy. The preparation involves cutting the lard into strips, adding proprietary seasonings, and then aging it in a marble container for at least six months. The resulting treat will melt in your mouth. Following some free time, you will travel back to the pier.

Experience the medieval beauty, grandeur and legacy of the Castagneto Castle during this Exclusive opening and visit only for few Silversea Guests.
Livorno, Castagneto Carducci Village Centre, Palazzo Comunale, Via Marconi
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Castagneto Carducci, one of the most popular villages on the Etruscan Coast of Tuscany. Perched on a hillside less than 6.2 miles (about ten kilometres) from the sea, the village centre of Castagneto has grown around the imposing medieval castle located on the hilltop. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of this charming old village, a peaceful holiday destination that comes very much alive during the summer months. Along the way, see the imposing Palazzo Comunale, with its dominant position at the beginning of Via Marconi, a long street that makes its way downhill towards the coast. The Palazzo Comunale houses the city's Town Hall, and its offices.
Castagneto Castle and Gates, Cobblestone Streets, Village
Next, a very pretty lane leads you to the 10th-century Castagneto Castle, where you are escorted on an exclusive guided tour of the period rooms and family portrait gallery. See the spectacular view from the original rampart walk running between two lovely, enclosed gardens. Castagneto Carducci today is a lived-in castle and private mansion that is not typically open to the public. It has belonged to the same noble family of the Counts della Gherardesca for 32 generations, where the siblings of the current generation come to spend their summer holidays and reside during the year. Walk through the gates of the castle to enter the small cobblestone streets of the picturesque village, observe the local country lifestyle and enjoy many wonderful, unique and exclusive photo opportunities.
Guided Castle Tour, Family Portraits, Period Furnishings, Maps, Coat-of-Arms
Next, take a guided tour of the Castagneto Castle. The modern use of this imposing castle hasn't erased its history, which lives through the family portraits, period furnishings, maps and family trees with the most pedigreed Italian lineages intertwined. The coat-of-arms itself, the Half-Imperial Eagle, granted by Frederick I Holy Roman Emperor, embodies the major characteristics of the dynasty. The colour red evokes the heraldic copper and enemies' blood, and the colour gold symbolizes the land, fortified castles and property of the family that defended Tuscany from the costal invasions of Moors and Saracens. All of this speaks the language of the eldest spirit of the Tuscan art of war.
Refreshment, Free Time, Castagneto Carducci Village
Following your castle tour, proceed for a refreshment including Prosecco, Juices and Canapes that will be served in the garden or in one of the state rooms.

Galleria dell'Accademia and the Bargello, and boasts an incredible number of important churches that house equally-important master works.

Florence is the Italian city most celebrated by artists and poets. Each street, palace and building is living evidence of its glorious past and proud people.
Depart the pier in Livorno via coach for the approximate two-hour drive to Florence, with a comfort stop made en route. Upon arrival, meet your guide and commence your walking tour of the city.
Piazza del Duomo
Your tour begins at the Piazza del Duomo with an external visit of St. Mary of the Flower Cathedral. The church is adorned with an impressive façade decorated in white, green and pink Tuscan marble. Highlights to be seen during your visit include the Bell Tower, designed in 1334 by Giotto, and the Baptistery. Its celebrated doors, known as the 'Gates of Paradise', were commissioned in 1401 and designed by Lorenzo Ghiberti.
Piazza della Signoria
Your next stop is the Piazza della Signoria. It is Florence's second major piazza, and the political centre of the city because of its Town Hall, or 'Palazzo Vecchio'. The Piazza della Signoria is also known as an open-air museum thanks to its many statues, which include Cellini's Perseus, Giambologna's The Rape of the Sabine Women, Ammannati's Neptune Fountain and a replica of Michelangelo's famous David.
Ponte Vecchio
Your tour continues on with a visit to Ponte Vecchio, also known as the 'Old Bridge'. Ponte Vecchio dates back to 1345, and is the only bridge in Florence to escape being blown up during World War II. It originally housed the workshops of the butchers before they were driven away by the Grand Duke, Ferdinando I, due to the terrible noise and stench they created. Ponte Vecchio was subsequently used as a workplace for goldsmiths and silversmiths; their shops still remain here to this day.
Piazza di Santa Croce
The final stop on your guided tour is the eastern quarter of Santa Croce, home of the Piazza di Santa Croce. Upon arrival, an outside visit is made to the Franciscan Basilica that dominates this large square. Over the years, the basilica's construction involved a renowned cast of Florentine architects and masters, including Brunelleschi, Vasari, Giotto and Donatello. Each summer, the Piazza Santa Croce plays host to the 'Calcio in Costume'. During this historical game, the hefty men of the four quarters of Florence battle it out in an ancient mix of wrestling and soccer, and are cheered on by residents and visitors alike. For most of the year, however, the square is a peaceful open space surrounded by stately palazzo, and intimate pizzerias and restaurants.
Following your guided tour, ample time is made available for lunch on your own and shopping. At the conclusion of your visit, walk from the Piazza Santa Croce to the pick-up point at Lungarno Pecori Giraldi, then re-board your coach for the 1.5-hour return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking, some of which is over cobblestone streets. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. On Sundays and religious holidays, inside visits of cathedrals and churches are not possible due to religious services in progress. Headsets are provided during the guided tour of Florence. A minimum number of guests per guide are required to operate this programme.
Explore the fascinating streets and squares of Lucca during a scenic and memorable half-day tour of this historic medieval city. Lucca endears itself to everyone who visits, hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls with cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades; it makes for a perfect destination to explore by foot.
Depart the pier for the approximate 45-minute drive to Lucca. Upon arrival, your tour begins inside the massive red bricks walls, which were built between 1504 and 1645, and are amongst the best-preserved Renaissance defenses in Europe.
Lucca
Lucca is enclosed by massive red brick walls, which help to give the city its special character by shutting out traffic and the modern world. Within these walls, Lucca is a peaceful city of narrow lanes, preserving intact its ancient Roman street plan. Unlike several other Tuscany's cities, Lucca is flat; many locals use bicycles, which impart an additional charm to the city. This memorable outing is ideal for those looking to experience a Tuscan city that is rich in history, art and architecture, but is hidden from the crowds of tourists.
Church of San Michele
Along the way, an inside visit is made to the Church of San Michele in Foro, which stands on the site of the ancient Roman Forum. It has a wonderfully-rich Pisan Romanesque façade that competes in splendour with that of St. Martin.
Guinigi Tower
Another outside visit is then made to the Guinigi Tower, one of many in Lucca that belonged to the Guinigi family, rulers of the city in the 15th century. The tower has a small roof garden, with some trees sprouting incongruously at the top.
Anfiteatro Romano
Next, proceed to the Anfiteatro Romano, formerly the ancient Roman Amphitheatre. Today, it is enclosed by medieval houses that were built up against the walls of the amphitheatre. It's perfectly-preserved shape reminds us that Lucca was founded by the Romans in 180 B.C.
Church of San Frediano
From here, continue on to the Church of San Frediano, which is adorned with a striking façade and a 13th-century mosaic (outside visit only). Inside, there is a splendid Romanesque font and beautiful frescoes. In the chapel dedicated to Santa Zita, her well-preserved body is interred.
Church of San Martino
Your next stop is the Church of San Martino (outside visit only). Lucca's extraordinary cathedral, its façade abuts incongruously on to the campanile. St. Martin is the Roman soldier depicted on the façade dividing his cloak with a sword to share with a needy beggar.
Via Fillungo
The guided portion of your visit concludes at Via Fillungo, Lucca's principal shopping street, which winds its way through the heart of the city towards the Roman Amphitheatre.
Following your walking tour re-boarding your coach for the return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 3.5km (2.17 miles), some of which is over cobblestone surfaces, and there are steps to climb. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. There will be an exterior visit only should a mass be in progress at the church. Guests may be able to enter on an individual basis to view the interior. Tour sequence may vary.
Discover the beauty of Pisa during this scenic, half-day tour of the city's historic landmarks, including the world-renowned Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Since the beginning of the tourist brochure, Pisa has been known for just one thing, the Leaning Tower. However, this world-renowned landmark is but one component of the city's amazing religious core, the Campo dei Miracoli. Here, the Duomo, Baptistery and Camposanto complete an unrivalled quartet of medieval masterpieces. These and a dozen or so churches and palazzo scattered about the town belong to Pisa's 'Golden Age', which took place from the 11th to the 13th centuries when the city was still a port, and one of the maritime powers of the Mediterranean.
Pisa
Depart the pier for the approximate 45-minute drive to Pisa. Upon arrival at the parking area, walk to the Campo dei Miracoli and commence the guided portion of your tour.
Campo dei Miracoli
Since it was first laid out, Pisa's ecclesiastical centre has been known as the Campo dei Miracoli, or 'Field of Miracles'. The sight of it is as stunning today as it must have been to medieval travellers. Nowhere in Italy are the key buildings of a city arrayed with such precision, and nowhere else is there so beautiful a contrast of stonework and surrounding meadow.
Leaning Tower of Pisa
Your next stop is the Leaning Tower of Pisa (outside visit only). Underneath the pavement and turf of the Campo dei Miracoli lies a platform of saturated sandy soil, whose instability accounts for the tilting of the Leaning Tower. Begun in 1173, construction of the tower subsided when it had reached just three storeys in height. Over the ensuing 180 years, a succession of architects continued to extend it upwards until it was finally completed and topped with a bell-chamber in 1350. Leaving the Leaning Tower, proceed to the Duomo.
The Duomo
The Duomo was built in 1064, a century before the Campanile. With its four levels of variegated colonnades and subtle interplay of dark grey marble and white stone, the Duomo is the archetype of the Pisan Romanesque style; a model often imitated but never surpassed.
The Baptistery
A visit is then made to the Baptistery. The third building of the Miracoli ensemble, the circular Baptistery is a bizarre mix; its three storeys of Romanesque arcades peak in a crest of Gothic pinnacles and its dome is shaped like the stalk of a lemon.
Piazza dei Cavalieri
Leaving the Campo dei Miracoli, visit the Piazza dei Cavalieri. One of Pisa's most interesting sites, the Piazza dei Cavalieri is a large square that opens unexpectedly from the narrow back streets, and includes the site of the Roman Forum. The central civic square of Medieval Pisa, the Roman Forum was subsequently remodelled by Vasari and became the headquarters of the Knights of St. Stephen.
Palazzo dell'Orologio
On the western side of the square is the Renaissance-adapted Palazzo dell'Orologio. In 1208, the military leader Ugolino della Gherardesca, along his sons and grandsons, was starved to death in its tower as punishment for his alleged duplicity with the Genoese enemy.
Following your guided walking tour, walk back to the parking area and re-board the coach for the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking for approximately 2.6km (1.62 miles) with some steps to climb. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Tour includes an exterior visit of the Leaning Tower only. Recently re-opened, admittance to the Tower is strictly limited and not possible on this excursion.
Start your Accessible Livorno Shore Excursion to Pisa by meeting your driver/guide at the Livorno cruise dock. Board your wheelchair accessible van, and enjoy the approximately 40-minute drive into the scenic town of Pisa.

Meet your guide at the pier and board the minibus for the 60-minute drive to reach San Miniato.
Wine Estate Cosimo Maria Masini
First stop will be at Tenute Cosimo Maria Masini.
Cosimo Maria Masini is a stunning sustainable, biodynamic and organic winery in the hills just outside of the medieval town of San Miniato. The winery is part of an ancient estate that once belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte's family and then passed onto the Florentine marchese, Cosimo Ridolfi. The Masini family own the 100-acre estate since the late 90s.
They have 15 hectares (37 acres) of vineyards consisting mainly of Tuscan red and white varieties like sangiovese, canaiolo, trebbiano, vermentino, malvasia bianca, san colombano and a very rare indigenous grape called Sanforte (they are the only winery to produce a wine with this single variety).
Vineyard & Cellar Tour, Wine Tasting
We will visit the vineyards and hear about why winemaker Francesco de Filippis is so passionate about biodynamics. We then take a cypress-lined walk to the wine cellar, which is part of the original building from the fifteenth century, where, depending on the time of the year, there is always something to see of the winemaking process. After the visit, we will have a tasting of their most important wines, including their vin santo (a true labor of love) with some nibbles; sommelier Marco Lami will take you through this tasting, giving you an understanding of the essentials of Tuscan wine.
San Miniato Medieval town, Enoteca Marilu, Lunch & Wine Pairing with Emiko Davies and Marco Lami
Your will reboard your minibus and head 15 minutes away into the hilltop town of San Miniato, which sits on the ancient pilgrim route, the Via Francigena, where you will have a private, exclusive three course lunch prepared by cookbook author and food writer Emiko Davies at Enoteca Marilu, the multifunctional space - a natural wine shop/bar + cooking school - Davies and husband, sommelier Marco Lami (formerly head of the wine program at legendary restaurant Cibreo, in Florence) have recently inaugurated in the heart of the town.
Marco will continue his wine lesson through the first course of the lunch, which is an antipasto platter where you will learn how to pair wine with food. This will be a rather technical experience, focusing on the deliciousness of food but also on how to match what's in the dish with what's in the glass (i.e., you will have to put both food and wine in your mouth at same time and chew together to understand if the pairing works). Marco will show this through a tasting of 4-5 food and wine elements, e.i. bubbles + fried food; tannins + proteins; nutty + truffles - we are in San Miniato after all - sweet + spicy, plus a dessert wine pairing with blue cheese. This will be followed by a pasta dish (e.g., handmade pasta like pici or ravioli, perhaps gnudi) and a dessert which will be paired with a dessert wine and a cheese.
After lunch, you will be driven back to the port of Livorno.
Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking of approximately 1.2 km over some gravel and few steps. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and those on a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear comfortable shoes and clothing, hat, sunscreen and a warm jacket during shoulder season. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Fattoria Sardi, Lucca Hills, Vineyards
The hills outside Lucca provide fertile terroir for some of Italy's most coveted wines and Fattoria Sardi has quickly become a reference for the country's biodynamic and organic production. With over 40 acres cultivated with Sangiovese, Vermentino Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, harvested by hand, Sardi's production includes rosé, red and white wines full of character (there is also an exceptional sparkling Pet Nat). Nestled between the Apuan mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea, the vines benefit from abundant sunshine, constant ventilation, and cool nights. The farm, which was founded in the 18th century and beautifully restored in 2006, is managed by a young couple. It boasts woods, olive groves, orchards, wheat and legume fields, as well as rooms for its guests and a dedicated chef's table, custom-built for one of Italy's most talented young culinary talents, Damiano Donati.
Donati, formerly of Lucca's award-winning Punto restaurant, created a full experience around fire-cooking using the best local, seasonal ingredients. He even designed 2 special barbecues, personally supervising their manufacture by local artisans, and a Georgian oven (similar to a tandoor), which he built himself.
Vineyard & Cellar Tour
You will depart from the port of Livorno with your English-speaking guide and your driver, towards the Fattoria. Here you will be greeted by the farm's staff who will introduce the farm's slow and sustainable philosophy and guide you on a tour of the vineyards and the cellar
Chef Damiano Donati
You will then meet chef Damiano Donati: his culinary philosophy is based on selecting the best ingredients and preparing them in the way that most enhances their natural flavors, while maintaining their nutritional values intact, whether it's oven baked pasta, roasts, stews or grilled vegetables and legumes cooked in clay pots, Tuscan-style. He also makes delicious sourdough bread with heirloom local wheat in the farm's own wood fired oven. Unsurprisingly he lands a hand in the estate's winemaking (though his specialty is cider).
Lunch & Wine Pairing
Donati will cook right in front of you, and together you will then enjoy an authentic Italian feast, with mixed antipasti (vegetables and legumes), pasta, fire-cooked meat and dessert, accompanied by a tasting of Fattoria Sardi's wines. Remember as you enjoy the best flavors of Tuscany, to take a deep breath, look around you and take in the arresting view. It doesn't get much better than this.

Savini Shop (or Nacci Shop) and Truffle Hunting
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Forcoli. Upon arrival, proceed to the Savini Shop (or either the Nacci Shop), a leading truffle producer for four generations. After being greeted by a family member, begin your guided tour through the stunning Tuscan countryside in search of the prestigious truffle.
Truffle Selection and Production
Along the way, the Savinis teach you how to recognise, select and cook truffles. In addition, learn all about the different varieties of truffles and the truffle-production cycle, including gathering, selection, cleaning, packaging, and more.
Lunch with Truffles
Following your truffle-hunting session, proceed for lunch back at the Savini Shop or Nacci Shop, then re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.2 miles (about two kilometres) over uneven ground, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. During the walk in the wood terrain is rough and guests shoes can get dirty. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, long trousers, flat, closed-toe walking shoes/hiking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment. This tour is non-refundable if cancelled within 72 hours prior to arrival in the port.
Indulge your senses with the splendid Medieval beauty, history and architecture of Tuscany during this full-day excursion to Volterra and San Gimignano.
Volterra
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Volterra, one of the most important historical Tuscan towns, first great Etruscan cities and Roman settlements. On the approach to Volterra, take in a stunning view of the town and its imposing fortress perched on an approximately 1,820-foot (about 555-metre) hill of yellow clay rocks.
Upon arrival in Volterra, take a guided walking tour through the streets of the town centre. Pass by the 4th-century A.D. Etruscan Arch, or 'Arco Etrusco', and the Duomo Cathedral, home of Guglielmo Pisano's The Last Supper and Fra Bartolomeo's The Annunciation. Additional sights to be seen include the Piazza dei Priori, a beautiful square dominated by the 13th-century Palazzo dei Priori, and the exterior of the Roman Theatre. Situated just outside the city walls, it is among the best-preserved ancient Roman theatres in Italy.
Following your walking tour Volterra's town centre, some free time is made available for lunch, shopping and independent exploration before re-boarding your coach for the drive to San Gimignano.
San Gimignano
The walled city of San Gimignano is renowned for its 14 Medieval towers, which once numbered in excess of 70 during the height of the Guelph-Ghibelline conflict. Despite the profusion of souvenir shops lining the main drag, San Gimignano is home to a wide array of spectacular Renaissance art. Upon arrival you will have some free time for shopping and independent exploration. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires an extensive amount of walking for approximately 2.2 miles (about 3.5 kilometres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, steep alleys and approximately 20 steps at the sites visited. Walking in Volterra and San Gimignano is at the discretion of each guest. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.
Learn the secrets behind the cultivation, production and award-winning flavours of Super Tuscan wines during this half-day excursion to the Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci wine regions. Amongst the most enthralling and diversified wines in Italy, yet there is probably no term in Italian wine that is more slippery, vaporous and misunderstood than "super Tuscan".
Bolgheri
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate one-hour drive to Bolgheri. En route, listen to the guide's commentary as you pass through the countryside of the Maremma region and take in splendid vistas of the cypress trees, olive groves, vineyards, gently-rolling hills, and the Tirreno Sea. Next, see the ancient castles and watchtowers dotting the rocky cliffs of the Mediterranean coastline, then drive along the famous 'Viale del Cipressi' before reaching the village of Bolgheri.
Argentiera Estate
After some time to explore to explore Bolgheri at your leisure, re-board the coach and proceed to the Argentiera Estate. Located on the coast of Northern Maremma approximately 31 miles (about 50 kilometres) south of Livorno, Argentiera is both the closest estate to the sea and the highest in altitude. It stretches from the plains up to the hills, and offers splendid views from Baratti in the south to Castiglioncello in the north, along with the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.
Winery Tour and Tasting
Upon arrival, take a guided tour of the estate, learn about the growing and production processes, and visit the cellars for a tasting of their Super Tuscan wines. These wines are some of the most prized and expensive wines in the country; some Argentiera wines have won international awards and were featured in Wine Spectator. Following your tour and tasting, re-board your coach for the approximate one-hour return drive to the pier.
Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking (for approximately 1 km / 0.6 miles), with approximately 20 steps to negotiate at the cellars. This programme is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or for those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests must be able to embark/disembark the coach via steps. If the Argentiera Winery is not available, a visit to the Azienda Agricola Le Macchiole, Caccia al Piano or Podere Guado al Melo is substituted in its place. Participation is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment. Minimum age to participate is 18 years old.
